As of Friday, January 12, 2007, Vanderbilt Information Technology Services (ITS) no longer supports the old VUwebmail application. ITS now supports only the new VUwebmail, which has been operating in parallel with the old webmail since June, 2006. New VUwebmail has most of the functionality of the old webmail and many new features as well (see below). One feature in the old application that is not yet available in the new VUwebmail is the ability to sort by file size. This feature will be added in a future revision. ITS migrated to the new webmail service because the old webmail application was based on software packages that have not been supported by their developers for some time. The lack of support implies that security issues cannot be attended to and fixed. New VUwebmail is based on supported software packages which are being maintained and updated by Redhat Linux. This enables ITS to provide upgrades and security patches in a reliable timeframe, often without any downtime to the users.
